2012 is perhaps going to be the one of the greatest challenges the country has ever faced since 1994 when it became a democratic country.

Long term challenges currently being faced include; Forex shortage, fuel shortage, lack of jobs, just to name a few. The results are now clearly being seen within the country as small short outburst s of criminal activity happen in certain parts of the country.

Self Sufficiency

The biggest question is how does the nation move forward and become self reliant and self sufficient? It seems majority of the problems that generate criminal activity are merely materialistic shortfalls people in the village aren’t even familiar with, yet they continue to function as a community.

Despite short falling in the Warm Heart Of Africa, one can’t help but think, isn’t there an opportunity available within all this chaos? The breath taking sites Malawi offers have never been marketed to their full potential, resources available within local communities haven’t been discovered nor nurtured, the hidden young talent that has been seen to appear nationwide, as well as the steady increase of tourism. Perhaps the Wawa Malawi Development Project Strategy is just what the country need!!

Mission Statement

‘To enable poor local Malawians to become self sufficient, through practical training and education’

Wawa Malawi Development Project

The Wawa Malawi Development Project is designed to help the local community gain a variety of life skills with the objective of becoming self sufficient. This will be through practical training and education by involving international and local partners, large organisations and the local community.

Strategy

Develop a series of strategic learning weeks throughout the country, and involve volunteers from educational institutions, local based companies, agriculture farms, international volunteers, transport and accommodation providers, to support and deliver training by constructing a well networked and fully equipped structure that involves training and work placement. Through harnessing regional strengths and local skills combined with efficient equipment to enable financial stability within communities that would thus increase contribution to eradicating poverty. Preparing local communities with necessary knowledge and education on problem solving skills and tackle tasks through a strong network of supplier providers and charities.

Expected Outcome

Increased practical educational system for those who cannot afford to pay for Higher Education.

Increase in community relationships.

Community financial stability increasing country economy

Increase in job opportunities across the country.

Greater understanding on how Malawians can use the countries natural resources to their full potential, maximising business essence.

An Increase in highly skilled Malawians.

Further opportunities for individual growth and vision.

An increase in community literacy and numeracy skills.

An increase in career ambitions, and educational knowledge resulting in clearer individual understanding of issues such as family planning and health.

The Wawa Malawi development project strategy could be used in other countries

The first 3rd world country to have an almost self sufficient community.

Malawi Fuel Crisis

Malawi has been gripped by an acute fuel shortage that has paralyzed the operations of different sectors of the economy. This is evidenced by the scarcity of diesel, petrol and paraffin. This shortage of fuel has hit the country for over a month now. The problem started with diesel and has been extended to petrol. Observations on Sunday, 6th December, 2009, showed that some filling stations in Lilongwe had diesel but most of them had no petrol as petrol minibuses travelling from Lilongwe to Blantyre were just packed at Lilongwe Bus Deport. Apart from transportation, the problem has also affected operations of communication sectors, service sectors and even the healthy sector has not been spared. When there is blackout of electricity, Malawi’s network providers’ (Zain and TNM) transformers use fuel for operation of their system. Due to shortage of fuel some areas are experiencing communication problems when there is a blackout. The fuel shortage has forced some heavy industries to cut their production while motorists are opting to use public transport to and from work.

Why are we having this shortage?

The major reason why Malawi is having this fuel shortage problem is shortage of foreign exchange capital to buy fuel energy imported through neighbouring countries. But according to Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL) the fuel shortage problem on the market has come due to logistical problems, inadequate foreign currency and limited stock holding capacity. Logistical problems has come due to congestion at Beira and loading depot since August this year as suppliers were not able to meet Malawi’s daily loading requirements at Beira which resulted in fuel shortage in Malawi for the month of October. In Dar es Salaam the congestion situation has been that ships have been waiting at sea up to 21 days or more to supply storage tanks at Malawi Cargo Centre. On the issue of foreign currency the market was affected by the shortage of foreign which forced the Nacala suppliers to suspend credit facilities at the end of October.

What government is doing to improve this shortage?

The Government of Malawi through the Ministry of Energy and Mines, two weeks ago assured the Malawi country that the situation would normalize by Monday (30th November) but up to now the Fuel crisis situation is not improving as expected. In an effort to combat this fuel crisis the Malawi Government through Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), directed fuel service stations to ration fuel to clients to so that there is optimum distribution of the commodity. In terms of buying, Government has allocated some funds for both spot buying of fuel as well to increase the amount of fuel available on the market.

Any impacts on the market!

The economy has already started suffering as some companies have stopped production. The Tea Industry has closed Satemwa because they could not operate with their diesel generators.

In the Textiles and clothing Industry , our own weaver and spinning company, MAPETO’s Dyehouse section has been at zero operation. No new design /colours can be sent onto the market. They use almost 5,000 litres of diesel a day. Due to reduced trips they are losing on average cash sales valued at MK 15 million and MK 150 million from their shops and distributors respectively per week. They are unable to export goods to Zimbabwe (a) no new designs due to no production. (b) no vehicle to take the cloth to that country.

In the transport sector, trucks have spent more than 2 weeks without trips to transport goods. Passenger transport has also been heavily affected as Bus companies have either reduced trips or manage the crisis at the cost of getting fuel where it is available. Siku transport grounded more than 150 vehicles yet they are supposed to deliver fertilizer which has a deadline this early December. Similar sentiments have been said by our Shippers and forwarders, like MANICA whose major impact seen is that their long haul fleet is on average losing between 8-12 days per month waiting for fuel.

In the agriculture sectors, companies that ought to deliver seeds and other agriculture inputs cannot deliver far areas. This may have an impact on the food security which is one of the major area of focus by government.

In the telecommunications sector, Telecom Networks Malawi is doing about 10% to 20% less to the normal distribution trips and there is Intermittent network supply in areas with sites powered by diesel.

A new unlicensed business has emerged as Diesel is being traded at more than MK250 per litre.

Companies are likely going to incur increased labour costs as workers will receive un earned income for working less hours than normal. In other words labour productivity will drastically be reduced. Working hours are not being followed.

Malawian Artists

The life, colours and contours of Malawi lend themselves to painting. Sometimes everywhere you look there is another picture. Painting causes an interaction that is seldom found between tourists and Malawians. It’s also thoroughly absorbing and addictive. Trying to record a sunset or a market scene in colour, or a moving elephant in line can be the most intense experience as you observe and allow the feeling of the environment to combine into image through your hand onto paper. If you don’t want to create art yourselves, you can buy it.

The art scene in Malawi is not limited to the stylised paintings that you will be tempted to buy on the beaches and streets. Amongst the street art are paintings, batiks and drawings that encapsulate some of the wit, striking looks and movements of many Malawians.

Malawi has only very few internationally recognised artists. Amongst them are two who straddle the western world and Malawi. Both are based in the UK, and have work that reflects both halves of their lives. The ‘new contemporary, Samson Kambalu, is currently winning awards for his conceptual work, while painter David Kelly uses his deep knowledge and understanding of the African bush to make canvasses come alive with the wildlife of the national parks.

In Blantyre, artists to look out for include Aaron Banda, and David Matoto (both highly collectable for birds and village scenes respectively) as well as Brian Hara, Jomwe, Innocent Willinga, Lovemore Kankhwani, Ellies Singano and Boston Mbale, all of whom exhibit at La Caverna at Mandala House. A selection of artist also exhibit at central Africana book shop in Uta Waleza shopping centre. Lilongwe’s galleries include Mtendere art gallery in Mbico House along Chilambulu Road, Art-house Africa, behind the Hong Kong restaurant in the capital city as well as La Galleria in Old Town Mall. La Galleria champions all the top names including Nayangu Chodola, William Mwale, Elson Kambalu, Peter Mtungi, and Hughson Mbawa, Noel Bisia and Nixon Malamulo and Peter Chikondi.

The highlight of the visual arts calendar is without doubt the Wildlife Society Art Fest in Lilongwe each November where over 300 artists and crafts people exhibit.

Malawi has long been famous for its hard wood carvings, which have been exported all over the world. Very few of Malawi’s carvers have been credited by name but through Mua Mission and a couple of the galleries including Africa Habitat and La Caverna, some of the master carvers are now achieving a recognised status of excellence.

Pottery and ceramics are less common now that plastics have arrived, but clay pots of all sizes are still made in many areas. Dedza and Nkhotakota Potteries are the key places to buy glazed stone wear and where traditional clay pot and ceramics workshops take place.

Malawi attracts more than its share for artistic visitors through Art Safari, a unique travel company which lays an equal emphasis on art and travel, with adventurous itineraries combining art tuition and Safari guiding. Many of Malawi’s artists have also benefited from its artist-in-residence scheme.

Sukhi Sohal, Founder of Wawa Malawi Group and Alpha Support Solutions Ltd, has been selected to be honored in this year’s Young Business Leaders publication, which is the part of the Who’s Who of Britain’s Youngest Business Elite, for his outstanding work and business achievements with the UK.

Of the 620,178 directors in the UK aged 35 or under, less than 3% have been chosen for inclusion in this title. It includes individuals who direct and manage a wide variety of successful businesses in the UK, and it aims to recognise young members of the business community who have achieved notable success. In today’s competitive market and testing economic conditions, it is no mean feat to be identified amongst such an elite group. At just 27 and having been a Director of a Multi Million pound construction company, Sukhi Sohal is the now at the forefront of British young entrepreneurs. At age 29 he founded the Wawa Malawi Group, which is one to watch out for, as this particular pilot copy could be used throughout Africa, and at 30 he founded Alpha Support Solutions Ltd, a business support unit designed to help new and upcoming businesses in the UK.

It’s also the first time in the history of Who’s Who publications that we have featured a Malawian, so well done.

Lake Malawi

Home to 1,000 species of fish—estimated to be more than anyplace on earth—Lake Malawi (also called Lake Nyasa) is Africa’s third largest lake at 363 miles long and up to about 50 miles wide in spots. Located in a depression 2,300 feet below sea level, it’s positioned at the crossroads of Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, and supports hundreds of local villages with its rich underwater stock (which is, unfortunately, gradually being depleted due to over-fishing). The lake’s southern portion—as well as a bordering nub of wildlife-rich land, Cape Maclear—represents the world’s first freshwater national park; it was also named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. A star of the waters here is the mbuna, a native freshwater fish known for eating directly from people’s hands. Bring your snorkel gear—as beautiful as the scenery is, the best part about Lake Malawi is what’s swimming beneath you in the crystal clear water.
Nearby: Cape Maclear, located within Lake Malawi National Park, is a perfect base for exploring the area.

There comes a time in life when coincidence cannot be justified when faith and entrepreneurship meet to create a vision and objective that will enable next generation dreams to be created.

On Friday the 27th of May 2011, I received a phone call from a close friend in Cardiff Wales, congratulating me for having appeared in the local newspaper. I was absolutely puzzled as she kept repeating the word ‘WaMa’. My curiosity led me to get hold of the article, and she was close but this article wasn’t about Wawa Malawi but a project known as WaMa a community project designed to help young disadvantaged people in Wales and Malawi by giving them the opportunity to learn vital life skills that will enable them to contribute to their communities in a variety of ways. Through identifying the challenges faced within their communities, the young people in Wales and Malawi will share knowledge and skills with the objective of giving the next generation motivation and inspiration, amongst themselves, as well as increased chances for employment. The two organisations leading the project are UK based, A Leap and Blantyre based AYISE (Active Youth Initiative for Social Enhancement). As you can imagine, this wasn’t an oppotunity Wawa Malawi wanted to miss, as our vision and objectives seemed to finally be shared with other like minded organisations.

WaMa meets WaWa

Having made contact with the Director of A Leap, Ben Joakim through facebook, he notified me that the Executive Director of AYISE Marcel Chisi was coming to Wales with a few Malawians from AYISE in Bangwe Blantyre. On the 18th of June 2011 I met with Ben, Dan, Marcel and Kondwani to discuss the project further and identify areas to which Wawa Malawi would be able to play; even though they were exhausted from their trips around Wales, it was exciting for everyone, the ideas shared and the proof described was quite overwhelming. Kondwani, was living proof of the projects succcess, like many Malawian teens lacking opportunity and skills, Kondwani attended training through AYISE, which opened doors for him to attend at the University of Malawi…today he is a supervisor at AYISE assiting and maintaining all the IT hardware as well as software. Even though thousands of disadvantaged youngsters apply to train at AYISE, financially, the centre is only able to offer the opportunities to very few, and therefore to maximise the chances of success a vetting system is in place. The cost of getting a youngster trained and skilled is approximately MK5,000.00 or £25, skills range from sport, art, graphic design, video production, music, IT and much more… A Leap’s project in Wales will also identify key skill shortages amongst the young generation and offer them the opportunity to fulfill their dreams through positive training and skill sharing. However the exchange of knowledge between the two countries will open up new possibilities otherwise never seen, when individuals design and fulfil their own futures creating economic growth. To make this happen we require all the support we can get from you, so please get in touch by emailing us at wawamalawi@africamail.com or joining our facebook group.
